Today Scott and I were on a Transracial Adoption Seminar panel to discuss our experiences with transracial adoption. A big topic, of course, was hair and the best way to take care of and manage African American hair. We've had plenty of lessons learned in that area, so we had a lot to share. We also discussed our experiences with people being curious, ignorant or just plain rude about our conspicuous family. We like to think that people are not mean, they just don't know how to react to our blended family and it's an opportunity to educate them about how transracial open adoption works. We were a bit surprised to learn that of the 6 or 8 families involved in this seminar, we were the
only ones who practiced open adoption. ;.(
I hope that after this seminar that the other families are able to open up their adoptions a little more to understand more about how this process can bless so many people affected....
After the panel was over we headed out to meet up with the Little Ones' birth mom for her birthday. We also visited with Papa Dave and Shawna. It was a nice visit, even though we didn't get to stay for long.

So neat that you adopted your children and they are part of a family that loves them!
ReplyDeleteAre any of them biologically related?
Yes, Melissa, David and Aubri are biological brother and sister (14 mos apart). We have open contact with both of their bio parents. We keep in touch with Emi's birthmom and that whole side of her family. We hope that one day her birth father decides to get into contact (more than once removed on FB).
