Things I Learned About While I Should have Been Napping

The caracal and how cats always land on their feet; they can twist their spines in two different directions at the same time (whoa!). I will have to remember the caracal when the kids are coming up with cool soccer team names.

The Battle of Messines.  That was sad and interesting and then sad again with the fiancĂ©e who lost her man in this battle.  She never married, lived to 100 and was buried with a picture of her fiancĂ© in her hands.

Trench warfare and the design of the trenches to save soldiers from shellfire; a series of rectangular switchbacks, like the top of a castle wall. _|¯¯|__|¯¯|__|¯¯

Secret tunnel warfare in which miners were paid 3x more than the soldiers to dig tunnels under the enemy. The British "undermining" the German mines (packed with explosives) like the game Dig Dug.

Kartoffelstampfer. German stick grenades had handles like batons and were called potato mashers. They had an "idiot's guide" on the handle to indicate how long the fuse would last once lit (5 seconds).

I fell asleep during the nature segment and woke up in battle. Maybe I shouldn't nap with the TV on...

Not Faffing Around

Today is supposed to be the shortest day of the year. I sure hope so because it sure has been the longest week. Yesterday felt distinctly like Friday to me, probably because I've shoved a weeks worth of work into 3 days. I've been sorting through 14 years of office accumulation, transitioning stuff to those I'll leave behind, purging stuff no longer needed by anyone and involuntarily taking trips down Memory Lane. Very. Cathartic. Indeed. And oddly enough, planned well before I decided to leave.

Let's see - what else?
  • I am almost done with Christmas shopping. Luckily for me, I have 2 elves who are grabbing up the last few gifts to be gotten. (Thank you, Scott & Emi!)
  • My mean baby sister forced me to test my blood sugar last night after dinner (and some wine) at her house. She stuck me in 3 different fingers with 4 different settings before getting a good amount of blood to do the test. Guess what? It didn't hurt! And my blood sugar is just fine.
  • My mom's in town for a visit and I'm cooking her birthday dinner tomorrow night - lasagna!

Hope this Friday Eve catches you ahead of the holiday rush!

Rock Your Baby

I got this song stuck in my head driving in to work this morning... George McCrae's Rock Your Baby (1974). You're welcome!

Memorial Recap

First things first:the turtle came back and he was curious about the chickens. He tried to get into their run...Grass is greener?

Nothing Here But Us Chickens

Emi and I were able to hit up a few of the local garage sales and snagged a few good deals:
  • We got David a metal toolbox for $2. He's informed me that he wants to paint it blue! That's my boy! We want to pick up real tools for him to add to his toolbox over the years...no more stinkin' plastic tools!

  • I got a baby aqua trench coat for $1! The trench coat matches a cool dress I got from Athleta a few years ago... don'tcha think? Not a clear or good picture, but you get the idea. Now I just need some cute shoes...

  • Emi bought a mini Christmas tree (the perfect size for our unmatched earring project) for 25 cents!

  • And I got a replacement picnic blanket for $1. (I left my cool maroon/star zip up blanket at the soccer fields a couple of seasons ago) (no picture yet as I've already washed it and thrown it in the back of the Disco)
I updated (finally!) my high school alumni website with a few items that were pending. And I also back posted some blog entries from 2005-2007 that were stored in the confines of my CoffeeCup blogging software. Along those lines I found some old lake party pictures and ski trip photos (Keystone 2007) that were embedded into web pages on my site and posted them to my flickr. Lots of sorting and publishing but I wanted to do that for completeness.

We opened up the pool this weekend and hosted a Memorial Day gathering for family and friends. It was a nice, relaxing day full of swimming and cheese balls!

[Nifty title goes here]

To learn, read.
To know, write.
To master, teach.
Found these words tied to my tea bag today.

Ahhhh Relaxation...

Is it just me or am I the only one who finds dental cleanings so relaxing that I actually fall asleep? I can't help myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bun). When the dental hygienist starts to clean my teeth, my eyes roll back into my head and I am in an Alpha State. Sometimes I catch a catnap unless my hygienist is talking to me. And when I leave I feel so refreshed...too bad my insurance only covers cleanings twice a year!

Peace Sign Omen

Not sure how to interpret this...
It's been in the triple digits here for the past couple of weeks and one day recently when I got into my car to go home from work, I noticed that the "ce" of my metal "peace" sign (dangling from my rear view mirror) was now on my dashboard. Maybe just time for a new car dangle? Let's go with that.

Where do I start with the updates?

Well, since my last post we survived the holidays, attempted to adopt a baby into our family in January, returned the baby to her birth mom in February, survived another birthday, survived my twenty year reunion .....yada yada yada

I guess you can say I've been in "survivor" mode for some time now....things are easing up a little, but now I've caught the bug to do some remodeling/decorating around the "new" place.... I hope to get back into the postings again!

Deep Thoughts

I dreamt a thousand new paths...I woke and walked my old one.

Spiderman has some tea...

Emi and I got a good picture of Spidey with a cool tea mug for her birthday invites.
