Most of the fun was outside with the bounce house and s'mores. But inside, we had the Donut Game!

Everyone had at least one chance at this game!
It was a fun time to get sugared up and run off the extra energy.
He was only 6 weeks old and was as big as Gracie was full grown! She had named him “Rocco” already and would not let me rename him to “Toblerone” even though he looks like a “Toby”… so yummy! His dad is an Australian Shepherd and his mom is a Labrador so he is an Aussiedor. He’s quite a bit like a new born human baby in that he sleeps a lot and sometimes he’s frustrated that he can’t communicate his needs to us.

This is Rocco on the Monday night that Emi brought him home.
Scott woke me up asking if I was ok because I was turned away from him and all the way to the edge of the bed. I had been having a really strange dream….

It started off in 1978. I was Elaine Benes riding in a bus in a big city. My friend Bob was driving the bus, and he looked like a young Bobby De Niro. I just happened to have Bob’s 2018 cell phone for some reason, so I texted him to let him know that he was driving the bus! And that he looked like somebody famous (You talking to me?). Then I was at a co-worker’s baby shower in their studio apartment. The space was small and lined with closed circuit cameras. I took out some Visine while the guests were in the other room and sprayed all of the camera lenses (there were a lot of them) to disable them. I guess this also disabled the lights because the room went dim and the next thing I knew, I was putting a 3-4 month smiling baby girl into a carrier in the front seat of my car like no big deal. We were driving off when Scott woke me up…

He had wanted a bounce house and we envisioned 20 rowdy boys playing Zombie Tag in the backyard running off the perpetual energy that boys seem to have. It was not to be though because of the rain. We had to adjust things a bit and move things indoors... with all those energetic boys! So we decided to get gross with the food and go all out zombie with decorations too.

The food was my favorite. I found quite a few goodies online. I made feetloaf (in this case, it was really just a footloaf) and zombie entrails...

... and a flayed man cheeseball. That was a very disturbing image...

I tried to make things scary for the boys, but the really scary parts were solidly initiated by the boys. Like when they showed up with Nerf guns for battle (unplanned)...

... and when things suddenly went quiet at 1:30am and I found all of the boys in the basement having a Beyblade battle. (no picture of angry mom or surprised boys)

Instead of running around outside, they ran around inside spraying foam bullets everywhere imaginable. Within the first 5 minutes of battle, half of the boys were in the bathroom together and broke Aubri's beaker with an ivy growing in it. ;.( We rounded the boys up to practice shooting zombies after that. The targets were outside and the boys were in the dry sun room.

This was a fun activity. Each boy had their own zombie target to compare with the other boys.

After the lights went out, there was a lot of fart talk and threats to draw sharpie mustaches, but the mustaches didn't happen. The farting was a constant though....

I made the kids settle for a quick group photo in the middle of the craziness. Cute boys!

Recently I heard Amy Besa on Splendid Table discussing native Filipino food and how Filipinos made tamales (bubuto) using rice and banana leaves instead of corn and corn husks. I was very surprised to hear of this because while I knew about some history of the Philippines and have eaten many lumpia rolls and cassava cakes in my lifetime, and I have Besa’s book, but I did not know about the Mexican influences in PI. The first Spanish settlers were Mexicans. Wow! I grow banana trees in my yard, but I have not successfully grown bananas yet. This past summer, my mom’s cousin was at her house gathering her banana leaves in order to make those wonderful rice treats for us. I was intrigued, but not exactly stoked about using my leaves for sweet treats. Now I know I must be making some sweet and savory rice merienda (snacks) with the banana leaves while I can!

She was lethargic and looking sad, so we took her into the vet. Her liver enzymes were elevated and they found something in her fecal test so she was put on antibiotics and some liver supplements with a recheck scheduled in a month.

She was not jazzed about taking meds so she got her fair share of peanut butter. Her appetite was not what it used to be, so we gave her anything she would eat: boiled chicken, rotisserie chicken, treats, food from the table. She got really used to being hand fed but she still got skinnier.
She seemed to improve a little. Sometimes she wanted to play with her ball and chase with us, but she got tired so quickly. We played for a minute then we showered her with lots of love. We hand fed her to try to get her to recuperate.
We could feel her spine and she seemed depressed often. We were worried about her not getting enough nourishment, so we got her some CBD treats which seemed to help her with anxiety and made her appetite increase, but her breathing got worse.

We were concerned about her being in pain or dying before her recheck, so I took her in at 3 weeks fully expecting to have to put her down. They didn't seem to think things were so dire because Gracie was still eating and drinking water.
Her vet wanted to run the same tests again to see where her liver enzymes were. She had lost 0.5 lbs since her last visit, which is quite a bit for her (she only weighed 10 lbs). I asked about her spine protruding and also mentioned that she hadn't responded to back scratches and the vet performed a simple test with her back leg - it took a little longer for Gracie to correct her paw placement and the vet suspected a back injury. She wanted to get some x-rays and send the films to a specialist. I asked her about the treatment plan for if a back injury was confirmed and opted to just go with the treatment: steroids and pain meds.
That night we had a hard time keeping her away from the excitement of a big boy birthday party. We sequestered her in our room but she was feeling so good on the steroids and pain meds, that she wanted to join in on the Nerf Gun fun. We didn't allow that, but she was out for small periods of time to say "hi" to company. I was hopeful for my baby girl. She wagged her at tail at me for the first time in 3 weeks. My heart soared. I was certain she was on the mend.

For a couple of days, she did well with the meds and eating her kibble and some of the wet dog food. Then she started quivering on occasion and having accidents in the house. The night before we took her in for her recheck, she would not even stand up. We took her outside to pee and she would only lay on the lawn.

I had the children say their goodbyes to Gracie on Thursday night, just in case she didn't make it through the night and we made her comfortable.

Friday morning at 2:50, Gracie tapped the seat next to our bed to wake me. I got up and took her out to pee, then I snuggled with her until my alarm went off. Her breathing was so much worse and she just wanted to be close. The kids were able to say goodbye again and when I left to run my errands, I put the baby gate up for the first time in years to keep her in her bed. I was worried she would be gone when I got back, but she was laying out of her bed with her head inside the bed almost lifeless.

I called the vet in tears again to discuss the plan for when I came in and this time I knew it was the last time. I could barely talk to her about the options available. I spent the next hour holding my baby and telling her how much we loved her and that it was okay if she wanted to go. A few times her breathing seemed to stop, but she didn't die at home.

I gathered her up, limp and breathing hard and drove her to her last appointment. It was a quick one. The vet checked her back legs and said she was not feeling anything in her back legs, and that was why she wasn't standing. She agreed with our decision to put Gracie to sleep and end her suffering. The vet put a catheter in my Gracie girl's front leg and let me spend a few minutes with my favorite girl. She wasn't moving at this point, but she was still alive...a bit like a zombie.
When she administered the anesthesia, my baby girl was truly relaxed. The next shot stopped her heart. I kissed Gracie and then drove home to mourn my sweet little muse.

My mom sent me 3 dozen Butterfly Ginger plants back in June. I didn't expect so many roots, so I didn't have a bed ready for them. I had to do some major rearranging in The Long Bed.

Bendy Picture of the Long Bed

It took a couple of days for me to prepare the bed. I had to relocate some peonies. I hope I didn't kill them in the process. They are in a sunnier location and they are divided up, so fingers crossed! I also transplanted my 3 dwarf Alberta spruce trees to the West of the Butterfly Ginger bed. I hope they make it too. I got the roots transplanted into the bed and hoped for half of them to make it.
I am not sure if I will get any blooms before it gets cold and I am definitely going to transfer some of these guys into a deep pot to overwinter in the sunroom, but I am happy with the way things turned out with this unexpected project. #laboroflove

I prepped a some tomato feta salad and 2 loose meat sandwich options for the visit with my family planned for the next day. It was a nice sort of lazy day.
Emi didn't want to go to the beach with us, so we gave her a pass. I was tired and a little sunburned so I thought I might stay home too, but we were meeting my cousins, so I bucked up. My mom convinced us to drive her old car that had been sitting a while. She replaced the battery while we were on the ocean the day before and that was about it. I still wanted to take our reliable car, but she and Scott said there was more room in her car for the gear. I lost that battle.

Note: She didn't tell us that the A/C wasn't working in her car until after we loaded up and were driving down the driveway.

On the way to the beach, the front right tire starting bouncing around so we had to stop to replace it. We contacted AAA for help, but they seemed to not be able to comprehend where we even were, even though we gave the exact location. Really? In this day and age?

We didn't hold out much hope that they would show so after finally finding the jack (not where it was supposed to be), we changed that tire and were on our way!

We made it to the beach and the kids played with their cousins in the water, but I was tired and sunburned and didn't venture far from under the pavilion. And I didn't take many pictures either. I feel bad about that...

On the way home, the 2 back tires started bouncing around and we had to drive super slow on the highway to avoid a blow out. You can imagine how the people commuting home after a long day at work felt about that. Oh well. We made it home and I hope everyone in the car learned some lessons about car maintenance!

Emi had the day that I should have had. Air conditioned trip to the mall. Uninterrupted P.F. Chang lunch and access to TV.Nolitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01652650404777818137noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14571929.post-76562722203988080882018-07-09T09:00:00.000-05:002018-09-07T07:02:36.897-05:00Playcation Day 1We decided to squeeze in a road trip to visit family in Florida. We left Oklahoma at 8pm on Friday and drove through the night to get to my mom’s house less than 24 hours later. It was a grueling drive in some parts, but we had a driver to help us out this trip.

My mom (the kids' lola) had a comforting meal of mushroom chicken and rice waiting for us when we arrived and we were so glad to be out of the car! My mom's place is just as lush (if not lusher) than it was the last time we were there. No alligators spotted this trip.

The next morning, my mom had some of our family from the Philippines over and they brought treats. Puta maya and biko - sweet rice treats. Yummy!

There was a lot of napping that day followed by periods of feeding - seafood and cuban sandwiches, oh my!!

Then on Monday, my brother took us out in the ocean. Salt water is good for the soul and my soul needed the time with family. It was a great day on the water!
I don't think my kids caught any fish, but they sure fed the fish a lot of shrimp. And it was so sweet to see how their cousin Zeke was so patient with each of them trying to show their landlocked, inexperienced selves how to catch fish.
